Our Staff Health and Wellbeing Strategy
Aspen Healthcare has produced a Staff Health and Wellbeing Strategy. This outlines our commitment to protecting employees’ wellbeing. We aim to create a culture where everyone feels valued, empowered to do an excellent job and is proud to work for us.
Our strategy takes an holistic approach. To strengthen and support our employees’ wellbeing, we need to build on four pillars. These are the core pillars of physical, mental, social or cultural and financial wellbeing.
Each of the four core pillars is equally important to maintain and improve your overall wellbeing.
Implementing our Staff Health and Wellbeing Strategy
Every Aspen Healthcare site has developed a detailed local plan to implement our Staff Health and Wellbeing Strategy. Many sites have set up their own wellbeing or social and charity committee, which employees from across the business can join.
Here are some examples of how we support our employees’ physical, mental, social or cultural and financial wellbeing:
Physical wellbeing: We encourage all our employees to keep fit and well. As an Aspen Healthcare employee, you will have access to the Hapi-life online platform and app. This contains practical tips on following a healthy lifestyle. We also offer you an online private GP service, health club membership discounts and a cycle to work scheme.
Each Aspen Healthcare site decides how best to promote healthy living. For example, healthy eating posters are displayed around Parkside Private Hospital and the staff menu includes balanced, nutritious options. Employees get free fresh fruit on ‘Fruity Friday’. Many members of staff enjoy taking part in the weekly walking group, Parkside football team or Pilates sessions.
Mental wellbeing: Aspen Healthcare supports everyone to develop and maintain good mental health. All our managers attend a training course on managing mental health in the workplace. We also run mental health awareness workshops for employees. These workshops cover ways to cope with stress and contribute to a transparent culture, where mental health issues can be discussed openly.
When you join Aspen Healthcare, you get access to the Employee Assistance Programme. This is a 24-hour confidential telephone counselling service. The professional counsellors can help you with personal or work-related problems at any time of the day or night.
Individual Aspen Healthcare sites also organise their own activities to promote good mental health. For example, The Holly Private Hospital has offered employees confidential one-to-one advice sessions with occupational health and held ‘stress buster workshops’.
Social or cultural wellbeing: There is a positive culture at Aspen Healthcare. We organise regular social and charity events, where you can find out more about your colleagues and meet others. Fun, laughter and participation are good for our wellbeing.
The social and charity committees at individual sites try to plan an events programme that appeals to everyone. For example, Highgate Private Hospital has a varied programme of staff activities and celebrations for national days. Recent highlights include a Macmillan Coffee Morning, a ‘Time for a cuppa’ event to raise money for Dementia UK and pancakes for everyone on Shrove Tuesday.
Financial wellbeing: We recognise that worrying about financial issues can affect our employees’ health and wellbeing. If you have any worries about money, the confidential 24-hour Employee Assistance Programme can give you information and guidance.
Aspen Healthcare employees get a wide range of company benefits and rewards. These can help you to save money, prepare for emergencies and plan ahead for the future. For example, we automatically enrol all eligible employees into a workplace pension scheme. You can get discounts on everyday purchases and claim back cash towards the cost of routine healthcare expenses.
Some Aspen Healthcare sites organise their own activities to support employees’ financial wellbeing. For example, two of our sites have arranged talks and financial health checks for employees with HSBC Bank.
